Curriculum
Mental Health and High School Curriculum This excellent curriculum guide contains lessons, including both print-based classroom activities and audio-visual activities. The six modules are written in the form of lesson plans that can be easily implemented by teachers without additional training.
Resources
Youth Net Hamilton suggests that teachers have the following resources on hand for their information when implementing the CMHA Mental Health and High School Curriculum: Children and Youth Mental Health (French) and Suicide Awareness.
In addition, we suggest that teachers provide students with information about the Crisis Outreach and Support Team and the Kids Help Phone. Free resources, including wallet cards and posters, can be requested directly from the site's on line order pages.
Posters have been developed by Canadian youth in hopes of reducing stigma. The materials can be downloaded free-of-charge from MindYourMind. Anti-stigma video PSA's have also been developed and are available on Much Music.
mindyourmindpro helps you help youth in the way that they communicate.
Training
Youth Net Hamilton partners with the Schizophrenia Society of Ontario, Hamilton Chapter, to offer school staff a 2-hour in-service called Understanding Mental Health and Mental Illness. See flyer for details.
For more in depth comprehensive training, enroll in a two-day Mental Health First Aid course. Information about trainers and upcoming courses can be found at Mental Health First Aid Canada.
